To enjoy the Borders a car is essential. The nearest railway stations are Berwick upon Tweed (35 miles) and Edinburgh (47 miles).  There are (almost) hourly buses from Ancrum to Edinburgh and for a £10 return ticket you can have a hassle free 12 hour day in the Capital.
