Tourist Information Drumnadrochit

 

Within the scenic village of Drumnadrochit you can explore the history of the famous Loch Ness and the surrounding areas by visiting the two exhibitions which reveal the sightings of ‘Nessie’ from the very first one by St Columbas in 568AD.  This pretty village has an abundance of lovely Restaurants and Cafes, an Art Gallery, Pubs, and a Tourist Information Centre.  Situated on the A82 it is an ideal village to stop and stay due to because it is accessible to many local interests, such as Walking, Horse Riding, Golf, and Fishing. Also, places such as Culloden, Fort William, Glen Affric and Urquhart Castle are within 1 hours drive away.

Loch Ness is 26 miles long and deeper than the North Sea. Loch Ness is the biggest body of fresh water in Britain stretching from Inverness to Fort William. Within 2 hours you can drive round Loch Ness visiting Lochend, Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus on the North side, visiting Foyers and Dores on the South Side.

Inverness is situated on the banks of the River Ness. This a modern town with an abundance of good shops situated on the high street and in the shopping centres, but has the beauty and tranquility of the countryside within a minutes walk away. Visit Ness Islands and walk via pedestrian footbridges along the River Ness.

Visit Inverness Castle which dates back to the 12th Century and has connections with Alexander Gordon, Mary Queen of Scots and the Jacobite Army.  Inverness Old Church is the oldest church in Inverness and is believed that St Columba preached here in 568AD.

Urquhart Castle stands on the banks of Loch Ness, 2 miles from Drumnadrochit. The castles history including the Noble families, Macdonalds, Durwards and Grants who held it is told in the Visitor Centre located there.

Corrimony Chambered Cairn is situated in Glen Urquhart. This is a prehistoric tomb dating back to around 200BC.

Fort George offers beautiful views of the Moray Firth and visitors may spot a dolphin or two when looking out from the Fortress.  The Fort was built following the defeat of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobite Army at Culloden. Its outstanding defences have survived throughout the years and today are still completely intact. 

Glen Affric is Scotland’s most beautiful National Nature reserve and one of Scotland’s finest Glens. It is renowned for its woodlands, combining rugged hills, forest, pinewoods and shimmering lochs.   Dog Falls is situated at the foot of the Glen and leads to Loch Beinn a' Mheadhoin, famous for its Trout fishing.  Glen Affric is situated two miles from the village of Cannich. There are two excellent way-marked walks, one to Am Meallan and the other by the River Affric. Glen Affric suits everyone with its different types of walks, fishing, cycling, wildlife, rare birds, pony trekking and flowers. It is also home to Plodda Falls where the largest Caledonian Pine Forest in Scotland is situated. 

Culloden Battlefield is the site of the last major battle fought on the British mainland. In 1746 the Army of Prince Charles Edward Stuart (Bonny Prince Charlie) was defeated by the Government Forces led by the Duke of Cumberland. The history and background is visually present within the visitor centre located here. 
Abriachan is situated 4 miles from Drumnadrochit. The Forest Walk is ideal for wheelchairs and prams and features a Bronze Age Hut, good quality footpaths through pine forests, Bird Watching Hide, and a Shieling used by Highland Farmers/Crofters to enable them to look after cattle and sheep when grazing far away from their homes.

The Glen Urquhart Bike Park is situated near the village of Balnain, 5 miles from Drumnadrochit. Cyclists can hurtle down runways and leap onto to fun boxes which is not for the faint hearted. Within the Bike Park there are Nature Trails and Forest Tracks to cycle on incorporating varied routes throughout the Glen.

The Great Glen Way encompasses beautiful forest walks and breathtaking views. The walk stretches from Inverness and goes through Drumnadrochit and ends at Fort William.
