Crieff - Tourist Information |
Crieff is the main town of Strathearn lying on the southern edge of the Scottish Highlands. It is a popular holiday resort and second largest town in Perthshire with a population of about 6,300 plus the one Irish guest house owner.
The town's name is derived from the Gaelic craobh - 'among trees'. The town spills from the Knock, an attractive wooded brae that towers over the town, down past James Cottage and on to the River Earn. James Square with it's fountain marks the centre of this ancient town.Montrose, Rob Roy MacGregor, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Robert Burns are some of Scotland's colourful characters, who make up the country history, that have walked Crieff's historic High Street. All of the bedrooms in James Cottage have been named after such characters with some history on display in their respective rooms.
Some of the local attractions take in the Glenturret Distillery, Scotland's oldest. They have a variety of exhibitions, restaurants and a worthwhile guided tours. James Cottage guests will obtain special entrance rates for the tour.
Crieff also has a purpose built Visitor Centre housing a paperweight factory and pottery. Nearby is Stuart Crystal factory outlet. There are fine Victorian public parks and excellent walks which start from James Cottage.
