Return to Kirkton House's Main Index Loch Lomond - Tourist Information

Touring Kirkton House is a good base for touring large parts of Scotland. Edinburgh (the Edinburgh Castle and HMS Britannia), Stirling (Stirling Castle), and Inverary (Inverary Castle) are only just over an hour's drive, Oban, Fort William (see Glencoe enroute) and Pitlochry (Blair Castle is just up the road from Pitlochry) are about two hours.

Glasgow has many cultural attractions and places of interest to visit (also accessible by a half hourly train service from Cardross; journey time 34 minutes) -  The Burrell Collection / Pollok House (probably the best museum in - the UK situated in beautiful parkland just south of Glasgow), Kelvingrove Art Galleries, Transport Museum, Cathedral, Rennie Macintosh Art School and Tea Rooms, several shopping malls, the "Barrows" flea market, etc.

Culzean (pronounced Cul-Lane) Castle on the Ayrshire coast to the south is about an hour and a half - well worth a visit and the international links golf courses of Troon & Turnberry are near there.

Golf We have excellent local golf courses (which are open to non-members Monday to Friday) in Cardross and Helensburgh.

The Highlands A favourite day trip for our guests is to take the Highland train from Helensburgh Upper Station (4 miles away) and enjoy the highland scenery without the hassle of driving all the way to Oban or Fort William and Mallaig (by the Skye Ferry). The train passes through some spectacular scenery. Another good day trip is to drive round to the Isle of Bute - taking the short northern ferry crossing onto the island and then return via the Wemyss Bay ferry to the south side of the Clyde.

The Trossachs Another pleasant day trip by car (three hours driving round trip), is up the west side of Loch Lomond (via the picturesque village of Luss on Loch Lomond side) to Crianlarich, across to the falls of Dockart at Killin and back down to Callander (Rob Roy Centre), Loch Katrine, Queen Elizabeth Forest Walks, Aberfoyle and the Trossachs (beautiful countryside) and back to the southern end of Loch Lomond.

Locally, there are many points of interest - Loch Lomond (boat cruises), Dumbarton Castle, Geilston Gardens (National Trust), Rennie Macintosh's Hill House in Helensburgh, St Mathew's (Kirkton) Chapel 1145AD (at the bottom of our drive!), distillery, horse back riding/trekking, a walk at the top of our valley to a Loch Lomond view point, Antartex and Lomond Outlets factory shops, etc.
