Tourist Information Kilcreggan and Argyll

Kilcreggan is an attractive Victorian coastal village situated at the southern end of the Rosneath Penninsula, surrounded by rolling hill pasture, deciduous and coniferous woodland and sea. The village has a well supplied village shop, a butcher, a chemist, a grocer, a post office and newsagents, a coffee shop and a bank (open Mondays and Fridays) with 24 hour cashpoint. A doctor’s surgery & health centre is a short walk from the apartment. The Kilcreggan Hotel lies just 100 metres away from the apartment at Lindowan West, offering a good range of bar meals and real ales.

The immediate area has a wealth of attractions, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh's finest domestic masterpiece, Hill House, the glorious Linn Botanic Gardens with its fine Italianate villa, the famous West Highland Railway and the Clyde Sea Lochs Trail.

The adjoining villages of Cove and Kilcreggan have many fine examples of Victorian architecture by, among others, Alexander “Greek’ Thomson and William Leiper. The pier at Kilcreggan is the last working example of the paddle steamer piers left on the Clyde. In summer months, board the ‘Waverley’ (the only sea-going  paddle steamer) at the pier and take a trip to the Isle of Bute. A regular passenger ferry also crosses to Helensburgh or Gourock, with sea connections to Dunoon and train connections to Greenock and Glasgow.

16 miles away lies the attractive seaside town of Helensburgh – birthplace of Henry Bell of ‘Comet’ fame and John Logie Baird, the inventor of the television. Loch Lomond and the Arrochar Alps are a short drive away offering awe-inspiring scenery, fabulous walks and the beginning of the Highlands.

The Argyll and Bute area has a rich historic past with many sites to visit. Just a few miles away up the Clyde, Dumbarton Castle was the ancient seat of the Kings of Strathclyde and Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned here in the 1500s. Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke of Argyll and seat of the Campbell Clan, is 50 minutes away while the historic city of Stirling is just an hour away.

Loch Lomond, The Trossachs, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling, Oban and the Isles are all within touring distance.
