| Ballindalloch Castle consists of an impressive 16th-century Z-plan tower house, which was altered and extended by ranges and wings in later centuries to form a sprawling mansion. The lands had passed to the Grants by 1499, but the castle was captured and sacked by the Gordons during a feud, and burned by the Marquis of Montrose after the Battle of Inverlochy in 1645. In the 18th century Ballindalloch passed by marriage to the Macphersons, and is still occupied by the Macpherson-Grants. Many rooms. Gardens and grounds. Collection of 17th-century Spanish paintings. Famous breed of Aberdeen Angus cattle. Disabled access to ground floor and grounds, WC. The castle is said to be haunted by a 'Green Lady', who has reputedly been witnessed in the dining room; as well as the ghost of General James Grant, who died in 1806. |
