| Barcaldine
Castle, a fine 16th-century
L-plan tower house with turrets and white-washed walls,
was completed by Sir Duncan Campbell of Glenorchy in 1609,
and is still held by the Campbells. The Barcaldine family were involved in the murder of Sir Colin Campbell of Glenure, the Red Fox, in 1752 which features in Robert Louis Stevenson's Kidnapped. John Campbell of Barcaldine, half brother of the Red Fox, tried James Stewart for the murder and had him hanged - 12 of the 15 jurors were Campbells. The castle was abandoned and became ruinous, when the family moved to nearby Barcaldine House in 1735, but it was bought back and restored from 1896. A phantom of Harriet Campbell, a 'Blue Lady', has reputedly been seen here, and it is said that a ghostly piano can be heard on windy nights. |
