| The Bishop's Palace, incorporating work from the 12th century, consists of a rectangular block with a taller round tower at one end. The palace was the residence of the Bishops of Orkney from the 12th century, when Orkney was held by the Norsemen, but was rebuilt by Bishop Reid in 1541-8. King Haakon Haakonson of Norway died here in 1263 after defeat by the Scots at the Battle of Largs. The fine and complete medieval cathedral is nearby. Also see Earl's Palace, Kirkwall. |
