| Standing by the sea, Broughty Castle is a tall 15th-century keep, with a later wing and artillery emplacements. The Grays of Fowlis built the original castle in the 1490s. Patrick, 4th Lord Gray, a treacherous fellow, delivered up Broughty Castle to the English around 1547, who then raided much of the surrounding countryside. The castle was stormed by the Scots with French help in 1550, and was partly demolished. It was taken by General Monck for Cromwell in 1651, and Alexander Leslie was imprisoned here. It passed to the Fotheringham family in 1666. Although ruinous by 1820, it was bought by the government in 1851, and restored and given gun emplacements, and was used until after World War II. The castle now houses a museum of whaling and fishery, arms and armour, and local history. |
