Once a formidable fortress and still a magnificent ruin, Caerlaverock Castle consists of a triangular courtyard with a gatehouse at one side, round towers at two corners, and ranges of buildings between, all still surrounded by a wet moat. The castle was built in the 13th century by the Maxwells, but was captured by Edward I of England in 1300, although it was eventually recaptured by the Scots. Murdoch Stewart, son of Robert Duke of Albany, was imprisoned in the castle before being executed in 1425. James V visited the castle prior to defeat at Solway Moss in 1542. The castle was surrendered to the English in 1545, but was later recaptured by the Scots. In 1640 Caerlaverock was taken by a force of Covenanters after a siege of 13 weeks, and dismantled. The castle was transferred to the care of the State in 1946. Visitor centre, children's park and nature trail to old castle. Video presentation. Reasonable disabled access and WC.
