| Carnasserie Castle consists of a ruined 16th-century tower house and lower hall-block. It was built by John Carswell, who published the first ever book in Gaelic in 1567, the Gaelic version of the Book of Common Order. He was Parson of Kilmartin, and was made the Protestant Bishop of Argyll and the Isles in 1566. On his death in 1572, Carnasserie passed to the Campbells of Auchinbreck, and it was captured and sacked in 1685 by the MacLeans and MacLachlans during Archibald Campbell, 9th Earl of Argyll's rebellion. |
