| Castle Menzies is a fine altered and extended 16th-century tower house, consisting of a main block and two taller square towers, projecting at opposite corners. Many turrets crown the building. An extension was added by the architect William Burn in 1840. It was a property of the Menzies family. The castle was occupied by Cromwell's force in the 1650s, and was captured by Jacobites in 1715. Bonnie Prince Charlie stayed here for two nights in 1746, but soon after the castle was seized by Hanoverian forces, led by the Duke of Cumberland, the butcher of Culloden. The Menzies family held the property until 1918, and it was purchased by the Menzies Clan Society in 1957. Many rooms. Museum about the Menzies clan, including Bonnie Prince Charlie's death mask. Disabled access to part of ground floor, tea room and gift shop. |
