Standing dramatically on a small island in a magnificent location, Castle Stalker is a tall, massive and simple keep. It was built by Duncan Stewart of Appin, who was made Chamberlain of the Isles. In 1620 the castle was sold to the Campbells, but the Stewarts retrieved it after a long siege in 1685; although the garrison surrendered to William and Mary's forces only five years later. In 1715 the clan fought for the Jacobites at Sheriffmuir. The 9th Chief did not support the 1745 Jacobite Rising - the clan were led by Stewart of Ardsheal - and the lands were sold in 1765. The castle was abandoned about 1780, but restored from ruin in the 1960s.
