| An unusual and impressive building, Claypotts Castle is a Z-plan tower house, consisting of a rectangular main block and two large round towers, crowned with square gabled chambers, at opposite corners. The lands passed from the Abbey of Lindores to the Strachans about 1560, and the castle was built soon afterwards. It was sold to the Grahams in 1620, one of whom was John Graham of Claverhouse, Viscount Dundee, who was known as 'Bloody Clavers' for his cruel persecution of Covenanters in Galloway; and 'Bonnie Dundee' after his death in 1689 at the victory over the forces of William and Mary at the Battle of Killiecrankie. His lands were forfeited in 1694 and went to the Douglas Earl of Angus, then later to the Homes. In the 19th century the castle was used to house farm labourers, but is now managed by Historic Scotland. |
