| Pronounced 'Cul-lane', Culzean Castle is a magnificent sprawling castellated mansion built between 1777-92. The present building incorporates part of the original castle, which itself was built on the site of an older stronghold. Culzean was a property of the Kennedys from the 12th century. Thomas Kennedy of Culzean was murdered by the Mure Lord Auchendrane in the course of a feud. The castle was completely rebuilt for the 9th and 10th Earls of Cassillis by the architect Robert Adam. In 1945 it passed to The National Trust for Scotland. A flat within the building was reserved for use by President Dwight Eisenhower for his services to Britain during World War II. Fine interiors. Collections of paintings and furniture. Country park and visitor centre - one of the foremost attractions in Scotland. |
