| Dunrobin, an elegant mansion designed like a fairytale castle, consists ofan altered keep, which may date from the 1300s, and 17th-century courtyardmansion. The castle was remodelled and extended around 1780, between 1845and 1851 by Sir Charles Barry, and again in 1915-21 by Sir Robert Lorimer. The Sutherland family were created Earls of Sutherland in 1235, and had acastle here in the 13th century, and Dunrobin may be called after Robert orRobin, the 6th Earl. The property passed by marriage to the Gordons.Collections of furniture, paintings and memorabilia. Formal gardens. Museum. The upper floors of the castle are reputedly haunted by the spectre of adaughter of the 14th Earl. She decided to elope with her lover but herfather, who considered the man unsuitable for his daughter, found out, andhad her imprisoned in one of the attic rooms. She tried to escape byclimbing down a rope, from one of the upstairs windows, but her fathersurprised her, and she fell to her death. It is said that the one of therooms she haunts has since been disused. |
