| Armadale Castle was built in 1815 by the architect James Gillespie Graham for the MacDonalds of Sleat, then extended in 1855 by David Bryce, although there was an earlier house here. The MacDonalds had lived at Duntulm Castle - said to have been abandoned because of the ghosts; then Monkstadt House, both on Trotternish to the north of the island: Flora MacDonald brought Bonnie Prince Charlie to Trotternish to shelter him from pursuit by Hanoverian troops in 1746. Armadale Castle, now mostly burnt out and ruinous, houses the Clan Donald centre and 'The Museum of the Isles' in some of the outbuildings. Partial disabled access and WC. |
