| Finlaystone House, a grand symmetrical mansion mostly dating from 1760 and later, was remodelled between 1898 and 1903. The building incorporates a 15th-century castle of the Cunningham Earls of Glencairn. The 5th Earl had John Knox preach here in 1556, and fought against Mary, Queen of Scots, at the Battle of Carberry Hill in 1567. The 9th Earl led a rising for Charles II against Cromwell in 1654; and, although the rebellion was a failure, after the Restoration he was made Chancellor of Scotland. Robert Burns - who was friends with the then Earl - also visited the house. Finlaystone later passed to the MacMillans. Visitor centre with Clan MacMillan exhibits, doll museum, and Celtic art display. Gardens. Disabled access to ground floor and grounds. WC. |
