| Ayton Castle, a rambling castellated mansion with a profusion of turrets, battlements and towers, stands on the site of an old castle. The old castle was besieged by the English in 1497, and held by them during the invasion of Scotland between 1547-50. The property was held by the Aytons in medieval times, then passed to the Homes, then the Fordyce family in 1765. In 1834 the old castle was burnt to the ground, and a new mansion, designed by James Gillespie Graham, was built in the 1840s, and then extended by the architect David Bryce in 1860. It passed to the Liddel-Grainger family, whose descendants still occupy it. Woodlands. |
