| Inveraray Castle, a large classical mansion with corner towers and turrets, was begun in 1744. It was remodelled by William and John Adam; then again in 1877 after a fire. The castle, which is the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, houses many interesting rooms, with collections of tapestries and paintings, and superb displays of weapons. Other items of interest include Rob Roy MacGregor's sporran and dirk handle. Clan Room features information of special interest to members of Clan Campbell. Nearby, but now demolished, was the 15th-century castle of the Campbells. James V visited in 1533, as did Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1562. This castle was burnt in 1644 by the Marquis of Montrose, and was demolished as part of the 3rd Duke of Argyll's rebuilding of the present castle and town of Inveraray. |
