| Kelburn Castle is a tall 16th-century tower house, although part may date from the 13th century, to which has been added a large symmetrical mansion. The castle was extended in 1700, and again in 1879. The Boyles held the lands of Kelburn from the 13th century, and John Boyle of Kelburn, a supporter of James III, was killed at the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488. The Boyles were made Earls of Glasgow and Viscounts Kelburn in 1703, for helping persuade reluctant Jacobites to sign to Act of Union. They still occupy the castle, making Kelburn one of the oldest houses continuously occupied by the same family. The grounds are open to the public as a Country Centre. Walled gardens. |
